In 1969, Arthur Mitchell, a leading African-American dancer, was appoint principal dancer of a major ballet company. He was sent to Brazil to start the National Ballet of Brazil. Still, he was devastate by the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., which led him to abandon his plans to set up a national ballet company in Brazil and focus instead on establishing a classical ballet school in Harlem. Mitchell’s first teacher was Karel Shook, a former Dutch national ballet master.
